We are a group of Grade 6 students here at École Golden Gate. Every day offers a new challenge as we make our way through our first year of Middle School together! Please take a look around our blog to see what we've been up to!

Fraction Stations and a Field Trip!

We were busy in Math this morning working in groups to review what we know about fractions! We used lots of different Math manipulatives and moved through different stations to review and learn about number lines, ordering fractions and finding equivalent fractions. Mme K and Mme Samborski were also with us to help guide our learning. There was so much to do, we didn't have time to get through it all! We'll be working through the rest of the fraction stations later this week. Stay tuned!

And... We're headed on a field trip! Hooray!
All 6F students will be going to the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada on Monday, May 9!
Information letters and permission forms were sent home yesterday and are due back ASAP!

It's been a while...

Time sure has flown by since spring break! It's hard to believe that May is just around the corner!
Here's a quick recap of all that has been keeping us busy so far this month.

Mme Bees came to visit us for 2 Roots of Empathy lessons.
The theme of one lesson was security and the theme of our second lesson was communication.
Here we are making "door hangers" with different messages of how to stay safe. We had the choice of creating a door hanger for ourselves, for a friend or for baby Arlo.

Here we are creating nursery rhymes pages. We worked with a partner and wrote a nursery rhyme in either French or English and got to decorate the page using lots of colour. Mme Bees will laminate the pages and bind them together to make a special book for baby Arlo and maman Sarah to read together!

Here we are in our groups after we presented our Reader's Theatre plays. We practiced all week and had to opportunity to showcase our hard work to the class. We all read with such great expression. Mme Careen was VERY impressed with our incredible theatrical abilities!

We are having a lot of fun in Math these days too! We are fortunate to have Mme K (one of our school division's Math Numeracy Specialists) working with us for the next couple of weeks. Here we are working in partners to complete different Math activities, BUT these were NOT your typical "sit down and solve an equation" problems. We were busy building 3D shapes, solving puzzles, using Math manipulative and all sorts of things!
Our time together flew by and our brains certainly got one tough workout!

Here we are taking some time out to read in our reading groups. We are still using our "4 fantastiques" reading strategies each time we tackle a new article, text or story.

And, last but not least... and better late than never... here is our April picture!

We're still looking great and ready for another great week of learning! :)

Baby visit and Science!

Happy Friday! What a great day of learning we had today!

We were very happy to have baby Arlo and maman Sarah visit us today! Baby Arlo has grown so much since his last visit. He can sit on his own and loves looking around and smiling at all of us. We learned that he really likes to eat bananas and raw carrots and that he now prefers playing with "real" things (colanders and cell phones) over his baby toys. We also got to see baby Arlo dance to the song, "Final Countdown!" Maman Sarah told us that he recognizes the song from hearing his Dad and older brother listen to it at home. We had fun singing along, too!

In Science, we worked with our table partners to complete an experiment to determine if air has a mass. Using pumps, we pumped air into 2L pop bottles and weighed our bottles to see if the mass  increased as we continued to force more air into the bottle. What did the results show?
Please ask me to tell you all about it!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Roots Pre-Visit, Science and Mathé basic facts!

Happy Tuesday!
Today Mme Bees came to visit us for our Roots of Empathy lesson. The theme today was baby milestones and safety. We brainstormed a list of things babies learn as they grow (crawling, walking, talking, etc) and then worked in groups to discuss all of the different potential "baby dangers" in our homes and how we need to prepare each room to keep baby safe.

In Science we started learning the properties of air and had fun moving around the classroom to show the difference between hot air (particles move fast, rise and separate) and cold air (particles move slowly, fall and move closer together).

In Math, we tackled a tricky mental math strategy involving multiplication and larger numbers. We reviewed that we can break larger numbers into smaller chunks (into their place values) before multiplying and adding them together to find the answer. While the strategy itself is something that will come with practice, a solid understanding of basic facts is what will facilitate using this strategy. Reviewing basic multiplication facts on a daily basis (even 5 minutes every evening) will truly make a world of difference! This can even be something that is done in the car on the way to soccer, swimming, piano or dance. Flash cards, using a deck of cards and playing "multiplication war" or even finding a fun iPad app are all great options. Find something that works and stick with it! You'll notice a world of difference... Promise! :)

Have a great afternoon, Gators!

Here we go!

Welcome back and Welcome Term 3!
It was great to see our classmates this morning and find out what kept us busy over the past week.

In Science and Math we reviewed the concepts we started before the break; the properties of fluids (Science) and decomposing a number into its prime factors (Math).

In Français, we wrote Mme Careen a short postcard about what we did on our break. We used everything we know about being good writers (spelling, grammar, punctuation) to write the best 3-sentence message possible. This will serve as our staring point for learning the "passé composé" verb tense. It is a verb tense we use quite often while speaking and writing, so we will be able to learn and put our skills to use right away and often. We learned very quickly today that being able to conjugate the verbs "avoir" and "être" in the present tense is essential for us to be successful, so we will be reviewing these 2 verbs tonight to prove to Mme Careen that we are ready to conjugate any passé composé verb she throws at us!
(And she will be testing us on them tomorrow... so we better be ready)!

Have a great afternoon! Looking forward to a great week of learning! :)
