GatorAid!

Today in GatorAid we completed 2 fun activities;
one for I Love to Read Month and the second for our Great Kindness Challenge!

First we played a "Kahoot!" where we had to match quotes to the story from which they came. Some of them were pretty tricky, but luckily there was a picture clue to help! Mme McKenzie beat us all (she looooooves to read!) but Jeremy L and Aidan R came in a close second and third!

Next, we put together a paper chain for kindness. We wrote an act of kindness on each strip of paper before linking them together to form a chain. Our chain will be linked with the chains created by each homeroom to make one amazing "Gators are Kind" chain! What a great way to celebrate kindness!
Don't forget to wear your animal gear for "Wild About Kindness Day" tomorrow!

Also, please remember to keep bringing in warm clothes (hats, mitts, scarves) and your non-perishables for Winnipeg Harvest! Gators are Kind!

... and headed off to the gym to find that all 500+ of us were dressed the same!

How many acts of kindness can we count as a school? We can't wait to find out!

* Don't forget all of the fun themed days we have planned this week, too! Check out the poster below and listen to the announcements to get involved! Go Gators!

I Love to Read!

Happy February! Happy I Love to Read Month!

Our afternoon homeroom reading time today was "www.Wednesday." We either read using a reading app we already had on our iPad, or we could read a Classic version of a story by scanning the QR code which brought us to the read.gov website. Please ask me about what I read in homeroom this afternoon!

Happy February! Happy I Love to Read Month!
Our afternoon homeroom reading time today was "Tunes Tuesday." We listened to a song while reading the lyrics. Ask me what song I chose to listen to!

I Love to Read!

Happy February! Happy I Love to Read Month!
We kicked off our afternoon homeroom reading time with "Media Monday." We scanned one of 4 QR codes, each one linking to a different fact-based article that we could then read on our iPads. Be sure to ask us about what we read! Star Wars, Bananas, Syrian Refugees and P.K. Suban... reading can help us learn so much!

Gator Aid

We had a very special social justice themed Gator Aid this morning. We reviewed that different families of different economic classes have different budgets each month and within that budget need to distinguish between needs and wants. Food and shelter are a priority over going a Jets game or taking piano lessons, for example.

After completing a possible budget for one family as a class, students then worked in their spirit buddy groups to complete a budget for families with different incomes and had to prioritize what they could provide for their family (a family car vs. a bus pass, basic groceries vs a full cart of food, etc.).

This activity was inspired by the fact that people on social assistance receive only $3.97 a day - roughly $119.00 a month - to provide basic needs for their families and is linked with
Winnipeg Harvest's Poverty Pledge.
(Learn more about this pledge by clicking HERE).

We hope this activity will inspire conversation at home about what we are fortunate to have and what we can continue to do to help those less fortunate in our community.

Grade Level Meetings

We started our day with Grade Level Meetings. Each Grade met as a group in the gym to review and discuss school news and Gator expectations. While each Grade Level Meeting contained some Grade-specific info, the general information shared was fairly consistent across all Grades. For a general outline of what was discussed, CLICK HERE.
(I attended the Grade 6 meeting with my academic group so some of the content included in the link is specific for them. For more info about questions/concerns raised at the Grade 7 and Grade 8 meetings, please chat with your Gator this evening)!
Have a great week, everyone!

Today was this first day of our 12 Days of Giving CheerBoard drive.
During GatorAid this morning we heard a great song about the 12 Days of Giving and competed in a Literacy/Math Challenge that had students racing in a relay to find out the cost of the different items on our 12 Days of Giving list. Once the items prices were collected, we added the total and submitted our work to win a house point!

Proposed Middle School Reorganization Meeting Dates

Tuesday, October 20 at Bannatyne

It is important to note that the Board of Trustees will be making the final decision based on Senior Administration recommendations and feedback from the community in early December. Until that point we will not know the final outcome.

Terry Fox news!

Lace up your walking/running shoes! Our school Terry Fox run is this Friday!
Students will be walking and running to support Terry Fox's dream of a world without cancer. This year, our school fundraising goal for the Terry Fox Foundation is $505 - $1 for each Gator at Golden Gate! This goal is not possible without your support. Please donate as you are able!

Also, a reminder that the meeting for the proposed middle school reorganization is this evening at 7:00pm at CSHC. Members of senior admin will make a short presentation and will be on hand to answer and address any questions or concerns you may have.

Have a great week!

iPads for the 7s and 8s and Terry Fox news!

An exciting day for our 7s and 8s! After meeting with our Ami-sprits this morning in homeroom, the 7s and 8s were called down to receive their iPads! Very exciting!

We also took some time to review the plan for our upcoming Terry Fox run (taking place next Friday, September 25)!
And, just what is the plan for Terry Fox? So glad you asked!
This year for Terry Fox, students have the option of walking a 3km loop or running as many 1km laps as possible in a 1-hour period. Runners can be individuals or can join up to be a part of a team (costumes and a fun team name encouraged)! On run day, once all of our kms are tabulated, we'll be able to see how many marathons we completed as a school team! In addition to counting laps, we will also be counting donations. All students, as they are able, are encouraged to bring in a $1 donation for the Terry Fox Foundation. If every Gator shared $1, we, as a whole, would be able to donate over $500! What a wonderful way to celebrate Terry Fox and help fund cancer research!
So, lace up your runners and get movin'. Golden Gate is ready to make a difference!

Ami-sprits and daily reflections

Today in GatorAid we once again met with our Spirit Buddies ("Ami-sprits"). Today we talked about why we like using iPads at school, one thing we have already learned at school and, most importantly, our favourite ice cream flavours! :)
We also began our school-wide literacy initiative that will have students writing and bringing/sending home a short written reflection of their day. Mme Careen and Mme McKenzie started off by modelling how to write a short reflection about the getting-to-know-you Smarties activity we completed on Monday. Next, as a group, we brainstormed ideas of what we could write about our "filling someone's bucket" challenge we took on yesterday. Today after lunch and at the end of the day, students will be writing their own reflection about their school day and will bring it home in order to share it with you! These daily reflections will move from paper to email/electronic format as the iPads roll out and will serve as a great way to help start the "what did you do in school today" conversation. We are very much looking forward to the many ways students will reflect on their days at school over the course of the year, and it is our hope as a school-wide team that students will become more confident in their written communication skills as the year progresses.

Ami-sprits and kindness

Today in GatorAid we met with our Spirit Buddies ("Ami-sprits") and talked about our favourite film, book, song, TV show and also what super power we would like to have and why. We also heard Mme Careen read us the "Bucket story" and brainstormed ways we can fill each other's buckets each day. Our ideas were posted up on the wall in our classroom so we can be reminded everyday how easy it is to be kind to one another.

Hope to see all of you out at the Family and Community BBQ this evening. (4:30-6:30)
Have a great day! :)

Meeting in our Ami-sprit groups!

Look at all of these great ways we can fill someone's bucket! Bravo!

Ami-sprits!

Today in GatorAid we had a chance to meet our Spirit Buddies ("Ami-sprits") for the year! Youpi! Today, with our Ami-sprits, we had a chance to learn about each other while eating Smarties! Each colour of smartie represented a different topic for each student to chat about. We were able to learn so much about each other and start the day with a (little) sugar rush!

We also had a chance to start creating our class belief statements by brainstorming words and examples for the three statements: " Les Gators sont responsables," "Les Gators sont respectueux" and "Les Gators sont les apprenants." We'll be working on putting these together over the next couple of weeks before posting the final version in the classroom.

Have a great week, Gators!
