We are a group of Grade 6 students here at École Golden Gate. Every day offers a new challenge as we make our way through our first year of Middle School together! Please take a look around our blog to see what we've been up to!

Leap Day!

February 29 does not come around very often, so we decided to celebrate!
All 6F students gathered in the cafeteria period 3 and 4 for some Leap Day fun!

After answering 6 challenging Leap-Year-themed questions, students were sent off through the school halls to complete a video-clip Scavenger Hunt before returning to the cafeteria to complete the final task of folding an origami frog.

The morning flew by and we had so much fun learning with our 6F friends!
See you in 2020, February 29!

Check this out!

A big Bravo to Josh, Piper, Anas, Jayanna, Jay and Sydney who all presented their concours speeches today. We learned about everything from Star Wars to Mohammed Ali!

Next, as the end of our I Love to Read month is fast-approaching, we took time to listen to Mme Careen read us the story, "Max et les maximonstres." Many of us are familiar with this story in English, so it was fun to listen to it in another language!

We also watched a video about how we can multiply by drawing lines! What?! Check it out HERE!

Wishing you all a great three-day weekend!
Looking forward to more learning next week! :)

Roots Lesson and Sleep Survey

Mlle Bees came to visit our class for our next Roots of Empathy lesson today. Today's theme was sleep. We talked about signs of sleep (yawning, rubbing our eyes...) and also talked about transition objects (items that we use for comfort; items that babies often rely on to fall asleep).
We listened to the story "Daniel's Day" and talked about how what comforts us when we have a bad day and how transition items can help us feel better.

We also have the chance to participate in a week-long sleep survey. For the next week we'll log what time we went to bed and what time we woke up in the morning. We'll also use our Math skills to calculate how many hours we slept. Some of us chose to bring our paper home so that we can fill it out first thing in the morning when we wake up. Others decided to keep the sheet at school and will have a chance to fill it in when we first arrive to Mme Careen's classroom in the morning. We'll be able to share our sleep results the next time Mlle Bees comes to visit us.

They're Baaaack!

Hello, tomato plants! It's been a while since we've seen you! You've certainly gotten a lot bigger!

Although some of the plants are pretty tangled up at the moment, we'll work on getting them sorted out and *hopefully* replanted into bigger pots over the next couple of weeks.
It's great to have our tomato plants back!

Concours News

Congrats to Sebastian, Carlos, Bren and Rowen who presented their concours speeches in class today.

Also, une grande Félicitations to Madi, Gracie and Paityn who represented 6F4 with their well-prepared concours speeches in the library this morning. They sure made it hard for the judges to decide who should continue on to the divisional level!

After listening to all the finalists, we were happy to learn that Paityn will be one of 4 Grade 6 students representing Golden Gate in the Immersion 5e/6e année category next week.

We are looking forward to hearing the rest of our class's speeches this week before leaving concours behind for another year. It's been great learning about so many new topics!

100 Day!

Happy 100th Day of School!
We had a great time celebrating together this morning!

Our morning started off listening to Easton, Shae, Tanner and Emery giving their well-prepared concours speeches. From there, we moved on to the ultimate "Aimerais-tu" tournament, where we voted to find out what "100 things" would come out on top!

And, what's 100 Day without a glimpse into the future? Look at us! We're so OLD!

After locker break, we continued celebrating with an Amazing Race type challenge. Students had to answer 9 questions, but had to correctly answer the first question before moving on to the second. We got a bit stuck on Question 2, but after that, it was full speed ahead!
Congrats to Bren who came in first place!

Finally, we did the 100 Seconds Challenge. We estimated how many times we could complete a certain task in 100 seconds before actually doing the task. How many times can you write your name in 100 seconds? How many push-ups or chair sits can you do? How about hopping on one foot?

Phew! We sure worked hard celebrating 100 days of school! It's a good thing Mme Careen sent us off with a yummy snack at the end of it all!

Here's to 100 s'more! :)

Roots and Concours

Congratulations to Paityn, Gabby, Peridon and Anna who did a great job presenting their speeches today. Here is the updated schedule:

We also had our Roots post-visit today with Mlle Bees. Today's theme was "Emotions." We learned that it is OK to have all different feelings and that we use our feelings to communicate our needs.
We then worked in groups to discuss and offer non-violence solutions for different bullying scenarios.

We also discussed that we all play a role in stopping bullying. We can help the person being bullied, we can talk to the person who is bullying others and we can get help from an adult if we cannot fix the situation ourselves.

Concours

A big "Bravo" to our first group of Concours presenters! Félicitations à Allana, Deanna, Gracie, Leya, Madison et Matthew qui ont tous bien présenté ce matin!
Here's a look at our presentation schedule for the remaining students:

A reminder that students are encouraged to have their speech memorized if possible, but the use of cue cards is fine too. Students' rough drafts and good copies should also be handed in once they have presented their speech to the class.

Good luck everyone!

Hé Ho!

What a fabulous day for a Festival field trip!
Here's a look at what we were up to today:

On the bus on our way to Festival!

Waiting for our first presentation to start!

We watched a silly show about how to become a voyageur.
Some of us got chosen to be a part of the act!

Watching Le Gros Show and dancing to the great music!

There were some incredible snow sculptures to look at!
And, of course, there is always time for a Group Shot!

Here we are at out last session; after watching a short skit about the life of a voyageur,
we got crafty and made our own little canoes!

OK... Just one more Team Pic... Here we are with our 6F2 friends!

Thanks for a great day Gators! Hé Ho!

Happy Friday!

What a morning we had!
We started our day with an assembly to wrap up our Great Kindness Challenge. Together as Gators we performed over 6000 kindness acts this week! What an incredible accomplishment!

Once we got to class, Mme Careen read us the book, "Souris, tu veux un biscuit?"
This is a book Mme Careen ordered from Scholastic when SHE was in Grade 2! Wow!

For the rest of the morning, we worked on fun Valentines-themed Math questions, continued writing, reviewing and editing our Concours speeches and took time to write kind words to share with one of our classroom friends. It was a great way to kick off the upcoming long weekend!

A few reminders for next week:
1) Our Festival field trip is on Tuesday! Hé Ho! Please remember to dress warmly (boots, ski pants, mitts, toques, scarves...) and to bring a bag lunch. Students will also have the opportunity to buy snacks/souvenirs if they choose to do so.
2) Our first round of concours presentations will be taking place on Wednesday and Thursday. Students should work towards having their speeches memorized, or written on cue cards at the very least, and should practice presenting with clear, strong voices while maintaining eye contact with their audience.
3) There are still a few students who have not yet handed in their first lab report (Expérience #1) and/or our most recent Math problem-solving sheet. Please hand in your work as soon as possible!
4) Don't forget to take some time to read! :)

Thanks for a great week, Gators! Stay warm! :)

Allo, Bébé Arlo!

We were very happy to have bébé Arlo and maman Sarah visit us today! Bébé Arlo is growing and changing so quickly! He liked hearing us sing and really liked the 'fruit de mer' squeaky toy Mme Bees gave him to play with!

Mme Careen also read us this great book:

Sometimes, things get messy and don't go as planned.
But, at the end of the day, everything will be fine! :)

PPCM SAMBA!

We had fun this morning sharing our PPCM Sambas! Look at our sweet moves!
Math is AWESOME!

The Great Kindness Challenge is On!

Happy Monday Gators!
Today's theme was all about kindness!

We had so much fun, let's make it last all week!

Don't be shy! Leave a comment to share how kindness was a part of your life today!

It's Thursday!

This morning in Math we continued working on our PPCM (LCM - lowest common multiple) sheets and started creating our very own PPCM Samba! We divided up into groups and each group member had to choose a multiple and what action they would do each time a number of their multiple was said. In the example we did as a class, Gabby clapped on each multiple of 2, Gracie jumped for every multiple of 5 and Mme Careen snapped every multiple of 6. When all three actions were done together for the first time, that number represented our PPCM! So fun! We will have a bit more time to practice next week before presenting to the class.

After Mathé, Mme Bees came to our class for our Roots of Empathy pre-visit lesson.
Today we talked about feelings and emotions. What makes a baby happy, sad, angry or scared? When do we feel those same emotions? How do we look or act?
Our next visit with baby Arlo is coming up next week!
We are all very excited to see him again so soon!

Last but not least, we had our daily story time with Mme Careen before we got to work on our concours speeches. Today Mme Careen read "Le Chandail de Hockey." Many of us had heard this story before, but it was so fun to listen to again!

What a great week of learning we had... and we can't wait to do it all again next week!
(And next week is a busy one too! I Love to Read Month continues, the Great Kindness Challenge is on -  complete with assemblies and a spirit week, our concours rough copies are due, we begin prepping for Festival fun... and then 'regular' good ol' learning on top of that! Wow! Rest up this three-day weekend... we'll need all the extra energy we can get!)

Art and Sharks

On Day 3 of I Love to Read month we read this fun book:

We learned so much about sharks in such a silly way!

We also had a chance to view some incredible student art work on display in the library. We each chose our favourite "oeuvre" and wrote a reflection on why we chose it as our favourite.
Our Gator Art students are so talented!

Get ready! The Great Kindness Challenge is Coming!

Français et Mathé

Today in Français, we read the story, "L'ours qui aimait les arbres." We learned that sometimes, even when you're very angry, the best thing you can do is take a deep breath and give someone a hug!

In Mathé, we continued our work on multiples and began finding common multiples between 2 and 3 sets of numbers. We tried to find the lowest common multiple of 5,6, and 8 but could not find it within the first 10 multiples of each number. How high do we need to count to find it?
The challenge is on! Who will find the right answer?

Monday, 1 February 2016

It's February!

Happy Monday, everyone!
We had a busy February 1!
Here's what we were up to today:

Mme Bees came to do our Roots of Empathy post-visit lesson today. We calculated the cost of diapers and talked about how we felt when maman Sarah changed baby Arlo's diaper during our last baby visit. Some of us were comfortable with it since we have younger siblings at home and help with diaper changes. Some of us were uncomfortable since we felt that having a diaper change is something baby would like to have done in private. We then worked in groups to discuss how we might react to different embarassing/uncomfortable scenarios. Each group had a recorder and a reporter that shared our responses with the class.

Next, in Français, we reviewed our concours timeline. We have a lot of speech writing to do over the next few weeks! Rough drafts are due Monday, February 8 and
class presentations will start February 17.
For LALALA today, and in honour of I Love To Read Month, we heard Mme Careen read us the story, "Gros bobo" by Jeremy Tankard. Children's books are so silly (and cookies and bandaids fix everything)!

In Math, we are continuing to work on multiples and are practicing all of the different 'tricks' we learned to determine what numbers are multiples of which digits. We completed questions in Showbie before putting our colouring skills to good use.
Just wait until you see what multiples + colouring equals!

And then, of course, our February picture. What a great looking group we are!

Looking forward to a great (short!) week! :)
