We are a group of Grade 6 students here at École Golden Gate. Every day offers a new challenge as we make our way through our first year of Middle School together! Please take a look around our blog to see what we've been up to!

Bravo!

It was a busy week - but a great week that ended with many of our 6F4 friends sharing their wonderful talents in our annual "Golden Gate's Got Talent" Talent Show!
Félicitations to: Allana, Madison, Paityn and Piper for their awesome performances and to Dylan for his 'behind the scenes' work with the tech team.

This year's show was put on to raise awareness and support for Willow Place Inc., formerly Osborne House. This past week, students were invited to bring in different items, required by Willow Place, in exchange for voting dollars. At the conclusion of the show, students used their voting dollars to vote for their favourite act of the afternoon. The "Golden Gate's Got Talent" winner will be announced Tuesday morning! We can't wait to find out who "stole the show!"

If you missed out on bringing in items/money for Willow Place, it isn't too late! Although donations will no longer be traded in for voting dollars, donations are still graciously accepted through to the end of this coming week. Please feel free to drop off donations at the office, or bring them straight to Room 17! Whatever's easiest!

Wishing you all a wonderful and restful long weekend!
Enjoy the sunshine! :)

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday

Monday was such a busy start to the week with our visit to the aviation museum, but we were busy learning the rest of the week, too!

TUESDAY:
We chatted about our favourite parts of our museum field trip and had the chance to play with "Frax Pax" in Math to explore and discover equivalent fractions. This review will help us as we move on to improper fractions and mixed number fractions next week.

WEDNESDAY:
Mme Bees was back for another Roots lesson to get us ready for our next visit with bébé Arlo and maman Sarah. This lesson was focused on communication, sign language and family traditions.

We also had a chance to write questions we would like to ask Arlo if he could talk. This was a lot harder than we expected! Up until now, we've always thought of questions to ask maman Sarah about Arlo, so we certainly had to put our thinking caps on!

THURSDAY:
We did a lot of work on our classroom story, our version of the book "La malédiction des Maths." We read the story in class a couple of weeks ago and are now each working on writing our own page of our story outlining an event in our daily lives that could be exaggerated into a "Math curse" type of scenario. We have already done our first thinking and are now working on finishing our first draft and modelling our writing after the format of the book.

FRIDAY:
Are you superstitious? Do you find 13 to be a lucky number? We started our day talking about different good luck charms, habits and routines we follow and then got right down to a Friday the 13th Challenge! We answered questions involving 13, solved Math questions using the digits 1 and 3, matched up phobia names to their definitions and completed an informative text about Apollo 13. The time passed so quickly and there was so much going on, that Mme Careen didn't even get a single picture! Now THAT'S frightening! ;)

For the next two periods, we were very lucky to have Mme K back in our room one last time before she head's off to a different school for the rest of the year. She brought back her fun Math activities and we got to work right away! Some of us picked new activities we didn't have time to try last time...

...and some of us went right back to the activity that we couldn't solve last time and committed to solving it before the morning was over!

What a fun morning and a great week of learning!
Looking forward to another great week next week! :)

Our trip to the Aviation Museum!

We had a great day at the Aviation Museum today!

Our tour guide's name was Steve. Here we are learning all about the Vickers Vedette! This plane was used to help map out the parts of Canada that had yet to be represented on a map.

We had the chance to sit on an Air Canada passenger plane. The inside of this plane looks very different to the planes we fly in today.

Now we are learning about of one of Canada's fighter jets used during the Cold War.

Here are the last 2 planes of our tour. There are so many different types of airplanes here!

Off to school, now! Chris Without a Hat taught us all about flight. We learned the four forces of flight and about a man - Daniel Bernoulli - who explained how the difference between high and low pressure create lift.

Now we are learning about the 3 control surfaces of an airplane;
the ailerons, the elevator and the rudder.

Time to play in the SkyWays centre!

Here we are completing the Design-iacs part of our afternoon. We worked in teams to plan, design and build an airplane out of recyclable materials.

We needed to think about what type of airplane we wanted to build and had to include as many features of the plane as possible. And we only had 15 minutes to complete it!

After our time was up, Christ Without a Hat scored each one of our creations out of 4. He tried to guess what airplane we built and then, after counting down from 5-0, he smashed our creations against the wall! Ahhh!

We had a fun day and learned a lot! Be sure to ask us about our favourite part of the trip!

Baby Arlo!

We were happy to have bébé Arlo and maman Sarah visit us this morning. Arlo is growing so fast!
He is learning to crawl and makes so many new noises!

Mlle Bees also gave bébé Alro the book of nursery rhymes we wrote and illustrated as a class. He was really excited to see his picture on the cover and LOVED the yellow ribbon that was tied to it as well.

This visit was also quite interesting for us since we had a lockdown practice during his visit! We were all very quiet under our tables, but bébé Arlo was making so many happy noises and working so hard to keep us entertained! I'm not sure if we've ever smiled so much during something that is so quiet and serious.

We look forward to seeing bébé Arlo and maman Sarah again in a couple of weeks.
We are so happy when they come to visit! :)

Taking Science Outside!

What better way to learn Science and celebrate the beautiful sunny weather than to get outside!

Here we are measuring out the length of the Hindenburg!
After reading that the Hindenburg measured 245 m long, we needed to put that into perspective. We discovered that the field behind our school is only 166m long, so the Hindenburg was even longer than our whole school and then some! Wow!

We also headed outside to play tug of war! (Sorry about the grass stains, families)! Playing tug of war simulates the different forces in effect when we talk about how objects heavier than air (air craft, animals, etc) fly. We will draw out our tug-of-war wins and defeats using vector diagrams and will then begin learning the four forces of flight and how those same vector diagrams can indicate a flying object's direction of movement. Cool!
Boys vs Girls!
 We are determined to win!
We are using all of our strength! Pull!

And, with a new month upon us, a fabulous class photo was certainly in order!
We think we look 8-months-of-being-in-Grade-6 smarter, don't you?

Have a great week everyone! :)
