We are a group of Grade 6 students here at École Golden Gate. Every day offers a new challenge as we make our way through our first year of Middle School together! Please take a look around our blog to see what we've been up to!

A quick update!

Hello 6F4 families!

Please check the Monthly Newsletter page (see the side menu bar, under the "6F4 Info" heading) for a short update and links to our course outlines and student-parent questionnaire.

Also, I have ventured into the world of Google Calendars and *think* I have successfully embedded a Google Calendar onto the "Monthly Calendar" page (see side menu under "6F4 Info" heading). My hope is to post upcoming events and due dates as they arise so that students have a place to double check what they should be working on. I have started posting a few items already, so please click on over and have a look!

Have a great evening!

Terry Fox School Run!

The streets around Golden Gate were anything but quiet Friday morning! Together we walked and ran the equivalent of 56 marathons... and showed a whole lot of school spirit while we were at it!
Way to go Gators!

Check out some team shots of Homeroom 17, 6F4 and their teammates!

 Great costumes!

Week 2 update!

We're already half way through our second full week of school and we've been keeping busy in Français, Mathé and Science.

In Français, we've been working hard at creating our classroom goals for the year. We've had a chance to see Mme Careen model how to write a goal, to work as a class to share our ideas and to write a goal with a partner. We've also been reading our goals aloud as a class so that we are reminded what we are working towards every day we're at school. Once we are finished reviewing and editing our work, our goals - in the form of an inspiration board - will be posted in our classroom and on our blog.

In Mathé, we've started reviewing "la valeur de position" and students have had the chance to be the teacher! We've started the last few classes with "Devinez le nombre" - an activity where one student chooses a large number (between 0 and 1 000 000) and then takes guesses from his/her classmates until the 'mystery number' is revealed. This activity has students practicing how to properly read and write large numbers, and has them using the "<" and ">" symbols.

In Science, we've been reviewing the steps of the Scientific Method and have also started our "Diversity of Living Things" unit with a sorting activity. Students worked in teams to place a bag of miscellaneous objects into groups with a commonality. We then compared how each team classified their objects and were surprised to see how many different object groups were created. (Check out the photos at the end of this post).

Finally, a few reminders:
1. The meeting for the proposed middle school reorganization is tonight, at 7:00pm at CSHC.
2. Thanks to all those who have already returned their questionnaire. I really appreciate you taking the time out of your busy evenings to do so! For those who still need more time, that's fine! I'm hopeful to have all forms back by Friday, but early next week is fine, too.
3. This is more so a homeroom announcement, but, our school Terry Fox run is this coming Friday. Our school fundraising goal this year is $505 - $1 for every student at Golden Gate. Please support this cause as you are able. Every bit makes a difference!

Have a great week!

In class today...

Today in Science, we continued to review the scientific method by asking questions and making predictions about what might happen when we fill an aluminium can with water vapour and then invert it into a bucket of cold water. As a class, we were able to make detailed observations and offer explanations of the results. We also took time in class today to debrief and reflect about our "défi guimauve." Students discussed how they worked as a team and, as a class, we made a list of how we can positively collaborate when working with others. We came up with some great strategies!
Our list included: Discussing, listening, helping, asking if everyone agrees, being prepared and having a plan, and choosing to work with people you already know because you are familiar with how they work. What great ideas! These strategies will be posted in class for us to refer to each time we're working in teams.

Today in Math, students were challenged to write as many "how we use Math in everyday life" ideas as they could. We watched a short video to give us inspiration.  Who knew that Math is pretty much everywhere we look?! How many ways will you use Math at home this evening?

Mathé, guimauves et spaghetti!

Hi 6F4 team!

We were busy this morning in room 17.
Our day started off with completing 80 basic fact questions in Math and ended with us working in teams to build the tallest possible structure out of spaghetti, tape and a single marshmallow!
We also took a few brain breaks and learned a few moves to help the left and right sides of our brains 'talk' to each other when we're stuck or getting frustrated with a task.
Hope you had as much fun learning and I did this morning!

Getting started on our structures:

 Watch the time!

Time's up! Here are our final structures! How did we do?

Bravo Gators! Great team work!

Youpi! C'est lundi!

Allo 6F4!

Nous avons encore eu la chance de rencontrer et parler avec nos amis aujourd'hui!
We had a great time this morning learning more about our classmates by sharing our "Vrai/Faux" statements and by playing "Trouve quelqu'un qui..."

We also had a chance to review the steps of the scientific method when Mme Careen decided we should put bar soap in the microwave... twice! It sure was a bit stinky, but we were able to compare and contrast the two types of soap and, as a class, made very detailed and scientific observations. Bravo!
Our follow-up experiments are: 1) to see if newer soap will react differently than old soap (soap that is 2 years old from Mme Careen's classroom) and 2) if Dove soap will react differently than Ivory soap. What are your predictions? Make sure to think of WHAT might happen differently and be ready to explain HOW/WHY this might occur. J'ai hâte d'écouter vos hypothèses! I can't wait to see just what might happen!

Bonne soirée! À demain!

What a great first day!

Hello there 6F4 Gators!

If you've made it here, that means you've officially completed your very first 'homework' assignment of the year. Bravo!

I had such a great time getting to know all of you (and your favourite foods!) this morning. I'm already looking forward to Monday and all of the fun activities we have planned.

Be sure to practice that handshake this weekend so you are ready to keep on meeting and getting to know everyone in our fabulous group!

Have a great weekend!
Une bonne fin de semaine à tous! :)

Look at this great group of amazing students!
