We are a group of Grade 6 students here at École Golden Gate. Every day offers a new challenge as we make our way through our first year of Middle School together! Please take a look around our blog to see what we've been up to!

The last day before spring break!

Hello everyone! Happy Spring Break!
School is likely the furthest thing from our minds right now, but let's take a quick look back at what kept us busy on Thursday!

We were very lucky to have Mme Jena from WISE come and teach us about electricity!

We worked with our groups to create different types of electrical circuits using snap circuits.

We created simple circuits and parallel circuits and compared the two.

We were able to light up a lightbulb, turn on a small fan
and then experimented to see what else we could create!

After we finished building all of sorts of circuits, we were able to see electricity move in a plasma ball. We could touch the ball with our hands and, with permission, we could 'zap' our partner too! Cool!

After we said goodbye to Mme Jena, we got to work on Math. We started by reviewing how to break a number into a product of its prime factors (les facteurs premiers) using the factor tree method (un arbre de facteurs). We then combined our Math skills with card stock and scissors and got crafty!

We each chose a number (the cloud), divided it into its factors (the rain drops) and kept on dividing the factors until we reached a set of prime factors (the flowers). Some of us were VERY ambitious and chose big numbers, so we had a LOT of cutting to do! After all of our pieces were cut out, we punched holes and tied the pieces together to create our very own spring-themed factor 'tree.'

Whew! After all of that work, it's a good thing we DO get a break this week!  :)

Enjoy the sunshine! Happy Spring!

The End of Term 2!

Tomorrow officially marks the end of Term 2!
Students had the opportunity in class this morning to check that all required assignments were handed in - and if not - were given class time to finish up missing tasks. A final list will be posted in class tomorrow and my room will remain open over the lunch hour for any students needing to complete and submit missing work. Please check the list previously posted on the blog to ensure all work is up to date!

What a fun evening of learning!

It was so great to see so many families at our student-led conferences this evening!
We loved having the chance to be the teachers to show our parents what keeps us busy at school all day! Replanting tomatoes, blowing up balloons, playing Math games and correcting French sentences. Phew! It's a good thing we got a snack at the end! :)
Thank you as always for the continued support of our learning!
Have a nice evening!

4:00 - Mme Careen's room is set-up and ready to go!

Monstres de multiples et Ninjas de Facteurs! Who will come out on top?

Time to get our hands dirty and replant our tomatoes! We also made sure to explain (and demonstrate!) the 5 properties of fluids. Science is so much fun! :)

Looking forward to seeing you this evening!

Dear Parents,
We are very excited to share our learning with you this evening. We have been working hard in Français, Mathé and Science and can't wait to walk you through some of what we've been up to!
Here's a preview of one of the Math games we can play together:

We are welcome to stop by anytime between 4:00 - 7:30. No appointment necessary!
Let's spend a bit of our evening learning together!
Love,
The super-fabulous students of 6F4

P.S. Mme Careen said there will even be treats! Yum!

Team Work and Term 2 Work Alert!

Today in Science, we worked in teams to classify objects as either solids or fluids using a Venn Diagram. If we felt that an object was both a fluid and a solid, we could place it in the middle 'overlapping' section. We will look at our diagrams again next week and decide what criteria we should follow in order to classify an object into a specific category.

Also, a reminder that Term 2 is quickly coming to a close and all missing work should be handed in as soon as possible. Assignments Mme Careen is looking for:
Science
- Expérience #1 - Béchers et bougie
- Graphique de Tomatosphere : les résultats de Groupe A et B
- Activité d'extension: Tomatosphere

Mathé
- Résolution de problème : L'élection de l'école.

Français
- Journal de Français - with a parent signature next to the goal reflection we wrote back in January.
- Brouillon et bonne copie du discours pour le concours d'art oratoire

If students are unsure if they are caught up with their work, they are most welcome to stop by Room 17 before school or at lunch to check in. They are also VERY welcome to stay, complete and submit any missing tasks at these times. Students have already been reminded (at least twice) about missing work, so there shouldn't be any surprises...

Have a great weekend! Enjoy the wonderful sunshine! :)

Science and our March picture!

We had fun in Science this morning learning about what properties water and air have in common.

We also learned that all 5 properties can be demonstrated using a balloon.
(We also learned that popping balloons can make a LOT of noise! Our poor ears!)

We also took a minute to pose for our March class picture.

CHEEEEESE! :)

It's Wednesday!

We had a great time learning together this morning!

In Math, we are continuing to work on factors by identifying common factors in a given set of numbers. We will begin applying this concept when solving different word problems, such as what size of tile could be used to cover the area of a rectangle.

In Français, we had a chance to watch ourselves presenting our concours speeches before completing a self-assessment (reflection) on what we did well and on what we hope to improve on next time.

We also had bébé Arlo and maman Sarah visit us today! Arlo is getting so much bigger and now has 4 teeth, can sit on his own fairly well (except when he gets distracted... TIMBER!) and is trying to crawl. We saw how much he attaches himself to his favourite toys and how much he likes our singing! (We are really quite good at singing in a round. So talented!)

Finally, Mme Careen put our scientific-method-writing skills to the test by 'acting' out each step. We learned that when we are writing steps for an experiment, we need to be specific, choose our words wisely and include quantities when required. We will apply this to our own project-planning as we continue to design our Tomatosphere extension experiments.

Félicitations!

Good evening Gators!
Mme Careen checking in with a very important concours announcement.
A very special congratulations to Paityn who placed second in the 5e/6e Immersion category at the Divisional Concours d'Art Oratoire this evening.
Paityn presented her speech about Starbucks with great expression and confidence.

Here she is with fellow Gator Chloe who also placed second!
Bravo les filles! Nous sommes très fier de vous! :)
